Resumo: Este ensaio tem como objetivo principal discutir a amizade nas sociedades
complexas, no caso trabalhado, entre entrevistados das 26 capitais de
estados brasileiros e do distrito federal, a partir das vulnerabilidades a que estão
expostas as relações entre indivíduos que se dizem amigos, no cotidiano.
Na análise das vulnerabilidades na relação entre amigos busco compreender
o porquê de algumas chegarem ao fim. Em um primeiro momento, tento estabelecer
uma relação aproximativa entre apaixonamento, amor e amizade, para
discutir adiante as relações sociais e morais produzidas em um processo de
amizade, e do amor entre amigos, e as vulnerabilidades que problematizam,
complexificam e tensionam algumas relações e levam outras a um fim. A análise
está recheada de comentários retirados de entrevistas dispersas, realizadas
ao longo de vários anos (entre 1995 a 2015) em todas as capitais de estados
brasileiros e do distrito federal, e que alegam a existência de amizades tão intensas
que sentidas como eternas, ou desejadas que assim pareçam. Tento
compreender o sobressalto de alguns entrevistados quando, tendo eles experimentado
amizades longas, de repente, um dia, estes relacionais se estranham
e tudo o que construíram juntos perde ou parece perder o sentido, e chega ao
fim.

Emotional culture and morality: about friendship and its
vulnerabilities
Abstract: This essay aims to discuss friendship in complex societies, in the case
worked, among respondents of the 26 Brazilian state capitals and the Federal
District, through the vulnerabilities that relations between friends are exposed in
daily life. Therefore, in the analysis of vulnerabilities in the relationship between
friends aims to understand why some come to an end. At first, try to establish an
approximate relationship between falling in love, love and friendship, to then discuss
the social and moral relations produced in a process of friendship and love
between friends, and vulnerabilities that discuss, complicate and tighten some
relationships and lead others to a close. The analysis is full of comments taken
from scattered interviews conducted over several years (1995-2015) in all state
capitals and the Federal District, and who claim the existence of friendships sointense that felt as eternal, or that so desired look. I try to understand the startle
some interviewees when they having experienced long friendships, suddenly,
one day, these relational if it strange and everything built together lost or seems
to lose meaning, and comes to an end.

Resumo: Este ensaio pretende entender o fascínio que a fotografia proporciona enquanto objeto de memória. Vista
como duplo do real, a fotografia é apresentada como o real reproduzido. Como uma cópia que tem o poder de
apropriar o real referenciado pela definição atemporal de sua ação. Como um passado em revelação para o olhar que

Photography and memory
Abstract: This essay intends to understand the allure that the photograph provides while of memory. Sight as double
of the real, the photograph is presented as the real reproduced. As a copy that has the power to appropriate of the real
represented for the fixed definition of its action, this is, as a past in revelation for who it observes. The photograph

Resumo: Este artigo trata dos medos expressos pelos habitantes da cidade de João Pessoa, e trabalhará
com duas categorias analíticas que tomaram forma nas respostas dos entrevistados: o medo como
instabilidade do futuro e do desconhecido; e o medo como expressão da violência urbana. Os medos são
abordados e analisados como temores reais e imaginários, vivenciados e propagados por uma população
em forma individual ou coletiva. Os medos nele evocados focalizam elementos de conotação moral e de
conduta. São medos que afetam o cotidiano de forma direta ou indireta, interferindo na organização do
dia a dia, ou criando obstáculos à reprodução simbólica ou prática dos arranjos possíveis à movimentação
espaço-temporal dos modos de vida e projetos pessoais e institucionais no interior das sociabilidades em

The city of João Pessoa revisited: emotive culture and feelings of fear in the city
Abstract: This article deals with the fears expressed by the inhabitants of the city of João Pessoa, and will
work with two analytical categories that took shape in the respondents' responses: fear as instability of the
future and the unknown; And fear as an expression of urban violence. Fears are approached and analyzed
as real and imagined fears, experienced and propagated by a population individually or collectively. The
fears evoked in him focus on elements of moral connotation and conduct. They are fears that directly or
indirectly affect daily life, interfering in the organization of daily life, or creating obstacles to the
symbolic or practical reproduction of the possible arrangements for the spatio-temporal movement of the
ways of life and personal and institutional projects within the sociabilities in which are situated.

Resumo:
Este documento apresenta e discute os medos narrados pelos moradores da cidade de João Pessoa, capital
do Estado da Paraíba, Brasil. Trabalha com duas categorias analíticas construídas a partir de enunciados
narrativos êmicos dos entrevistados: o medo como instabilidade do futuro e do desconhecido; e o medo
como expressão da violência urbana. Os medos em análise neste documento são medos que afetam o
cotidiano dos interlocutores de forma direta ou indireta. Os medos nele evocados focalizam elementos
de conotação emocional, moral e de conduta, criando óbices à reprodução simbólica ou à prática
situacionais dos arranjos possíveis à movimentação espaço-temporal dos modos de vida e projetos
pessoais e institucionais no interior das sociabilidades vividas pelos interlocutores.

Balanço comparativo da produção da UFPB campus I sobre a cidade de João Pessoa,
Paraíba, 1992-2012, inserido nas linhas de pesquisa do GREM/UFPB, intituladas
Observatório sobre Cidades e História das Ciências Sociais. O objetivo maior do projeto
consiste na elaboração de um Banco de Dados sobre a produção acadêmica que tem como
universo temático a cidade de João Pessoa. O projeto busca também produzir um balanço

Abstract: This article aims to present a first presentation of the research project
Comparative Balance of the Production of UFPB campus I on the city of João Pessoa,
Paraíba, 1992-2012, inserted in the lines of research of GREM/UFPB, entitled Observatory
on Cities and History of Social Sciences. The main objective of the project is the
elaboration of a Database on the academic production that has as its thematic universe the
city of João Pessoa, Paraiba, Brazil. The project also seeks to produce a balance of the

ABSTRACT: This paper discusses the murder of one young man by another, a childhood friend and neighbor, for a banal motive. It analyzes the trajectory of the victim and his family up to the moment of the crime, his death and the subsequent developments so as to understand the moral frames of reference and accountability of the actors in the recomposition of the victim’s family, the aggressor and his family in order to maintain and improve neighborly ties and friendship. This trajectory confers meaning to the practices, lends support to intentions and justifications, and is significant in terms of understanding the act that led to the crime and the efforts of the families to support the aggressor. It explores friendship, violent actions among friends, remorse, family and neighborhood bonds, and the emotional and moral codes that allowed the aggressor to reassemble the episode that led to the death of his ‘best’ friend. How does crime, through its unique and extraordinary aspects, transmute social and individual relations? What emotional aspects are in play and how does normal daily life resume, including the processes of mourning, repentance and the reconstruction of personal and social bonds between the affected families and the aggressor? Resumo: Este artigo objetiva debater, no interior de uma antropologia e de uma sociologia das
Emoções e da Moralidade, as interações em situações cotidianas de uma pequena cidade, tendo
como recorte etnográfico as sociabilidades urbanas de um município do interior da Paraíba. A
pequena cidade é entendida como locus de uma análise interacionista e relacional ampla, em
que se problematiza a construção e a apresentação do self e a formação de redes de significados
sensíveis e conformadores de trocas simbólicas e materiais, que dão a dimensão deste estilo
particular de urbanismo. O artigo problematiza a dimensão da fofoca em pequenas cidades
como forma de acessar, no cotidiano pessoalizado do contexto interacional estudado, a tensão
criativa de individualidades reciprocamente monitoradas e em movimentos de mostrar-se e
esconder-se, de revelar-se em conformidade com a ordem moral vigente e mesmo de renová-la
mediante a administração de escândalos e situações limites. Enfatiza, portanto, a pequena
cidade como mundo social dinâmico, de selves em permanente jogo e risco de imposição de si

Emotional Culture and Morality in Small Cities: an ethnographic analysis of the role of gossip in
small-scale urban sociabilities
Abstract: This article aims to discuss, within anthropology and sociology of Emotions and
Morality, the interactions in everyday situations of a small city, having as ethnographic
clipping the urban sociabilities of a municipality in the Paraíba‟s countryside. The small city is
understood as the locus of a broad interactional and relational analysis, in which the
construction and presentation of the self is problematized as well as the formation of networks
of sensitive meanings and shapers of symbolic and material exchanges that give the dimension
of this particular style of urbanism. The article problematizes the dimension of gossip in small
cities as a way of accessing, in the everyday pessoality of this interactional context, the creative
tension of reciprocally monitored individualities and movements of showing and hiding, of
revealing oneself in accordance with existing moral order and even renewing it by
administering scandals and limite situations. The article emphasizes, therefore, the small city as
a dynamic social world, of selves in permanent game and risk of imposition of self and of

Resumo: Discutem-se aqui formas de controle e administração de tensões na convivência
cotidiana entre moradores de um bairro popular de João Pessoa-PB. Tem-se por referência uma
invasão ocorrida nos anos 1990 em uma de suas ruas. Ali moradores passaram a conviver com
barracos que logo se transformavam em alvenaria. Isto gerou dissenso entre estabelecidos e
novos moradores, havendo posicionamentos no sentido da integração e expulsão pela força
destes novos. Havia consenso quanto à invasão ter repercutido negativamente na estima do
Varjão/Rangel e na imagem que a cidade tinha do bairro, percebido como ―um reduto de
bandidos. A reflexão se apóia em entrevistas e histórias de vida principalmente dos moradores
da rua invadida. A maioria habitava o bairro há mais de quarenta anos. Todos se conheciam e
interagiam intensamente entre si, havendo amizade e solidariedade coletiva expressa em
mutirões para a construção de casas e de benfeitorias na rua e no bairro. A partir de 1970 o
bairro cresceu e enclaves improvisados surgiram. Neste contexto de situações tensas e de
desorganização normativa se busca refletir sobre formas de controle social e de administração

Under the eyes of the neighborhood: an ethnography of the forms of control and management of
tensions in a popular neighborhood
Abstract: We discuss here ways of controlling and managing tensions in daily living among
residents of a popular neighborhood of João Pessoa-PB. One has by reference an invasion
occurred in years 1990 in one of its streets. There, residents lived with shacks that soon became
masonry. This has led to dissent between established and new residents, with positions towards
the integration and expulsion by force of these new ones. There was a consensus that the
invasion had a negative impact on Varjão / Rangel's esteem and on the city's image of the
neighborhood, perceived as "a bandit place". The analysis is based on interviews and life
stories mainly of the residents of the invaded street. Most of them lived in the neighborhood for
over forty years. Everyone knew each other and interacted intensely with each other, and there
was friendship and collective solidarity expressed in joint efforts to build homes and
improvements in the street and in the neighborhood. From 1970 the neighborhood grew and
improvised enclaves appeared. In this context of tense situations and normative
disorganization, we seek to reflect on forms of social control and daily stress management.

RESUMO: Este artigo discute os sentidos emocionais e morais
do fenômeno da amizade em contextos interacionias e societais
da modernidade urbana a partir da perspectiva da Antropologia
das Emoções. A amizade, desde uma leitura simmeliana e
goffmaniana, e do social e da cultura, é problematizada como um
microcosmo organizacional e como um enquadre vulnerabilizado
de interações, projeções e expectativas emocionais e morais
reciprocamente dirigidas e administradas no cotidiano de atores e
agentes sociais que se dispõem à construção de um sistema
diádico de confiança, sofrimento e prazer.

EMOTIONAL AND MORAL
MEANINGS OF FRIENDSHIP:
AN APPROACH FROM THE
ANTHROPOLOGY OF EMOTIONS
ABSTRACT: This article discusses the emotional and moral
meanings of the phenomenon of friendship in the interactional
and societal contexts of urban modernity from the perspective of
the Anthropology of Emotions. The friendship, from a simmelian
and goffmanian reading of the social and the culture, is
problematized as an organizational microcosm and as a
vulnerable frame of interactions, projections and emotional and
moral expectations reciprocally directed and administered in the
daily lives of actors and social agents that are building a dyadic
system of trust, suffering and pleasure.

Resumo: Este artigo aborda uma ofensiva civilizadora levada a cabo pela mídia, como
empreendedor moral na cidade de João Pessoa, capital do Estado da Paraíba, logo após um
evento crítico conhecido como a “Chacina do Rangel”, episódio que abalou a cidade, o
Estado, com repercussões nacionais. Analisa, especificamente, a disputa moral em um
regime de pânico instaurado pela mídia sob o impacto da “Chacina do Rangel” no cotidiano
dos moradores do Varjão/Rangel, bairro da capital paraibana onde aconteceu a chacina. A
crueldade e a banalidade do crime colocaram o bairro em evidência na cidade, ocasionando
uma série de atitudes de moralização e controle por parte da mídia como empreendedor
moral, envolvendo o poder público e as igrejas, principalmente a católica. Discute-se aqui
uma das formas visíveis de disputa moral acontecida logo após a chacina: a busca de
criação de um santuário em memória das vítimas da chacina no local da tragédia pelos
moradores e as negociações, tensões, desentendimentos e impasses em torno da
possibilidade de sua construção, junto ao processo desencadeado pelo poder público de
pacificação do bairro, assumindo o estigma do lugar como violento e perigoso. Palavras Chave:

Moral Dispute in a Panic Disorder: civilizing offensive and moral appropriation of
a tragedy
Abstract: This article deals with a civilizing offensive carried out by the media, as a moral
entrepreneur in the city of João Pessoa, capital of the State of Paraiba, shortly after a
critical event known as the “Rangel’s slaughter” ("Chacina do Rangel"), episode that shook
the city, the State, and had national repercussions. It analyzes, specifically, the moral
dispute in a panic regime established by the media under the impact of "Chacina do
Rangel" in the daily life of the residents of Varjão/Rangel, a neighborhood in the capital of
Paraiba, where the slaughter happened. The cruelty and banality of crime put the
neighborhood in evidence in the city, causing a series of attitudes of moralization and
control on the part of the media as moral entrepreneur, involving the public power and the
churches, mainly the Catholic one. This article discusses one of the visible forms of moral
dispute that followed the slaughter: the search to create a shrine in memory of the victims
of the slaughter at the place of the tragedy by the residents and the negotiations, tensions,
disagreements and impasses surrounding the possibility of Its construction, next to the
process triggered by the public power of pacification of the neighborhood, assuming the
